Dress codes and entry

What to wear, and what to carry.

Thailand’s legal drinking age is 20, and venues licensed under the Entertainment Place Act must not admit anyone under 20 and must check photo ID: carry your passport. Each venue also sets its own door and dress rules: Sina admits 14 and over with a parent before 18:00 and refuses sports jerseys and Crocs; Hard Rock is 20 and over after 22:00; several hotel bars ask for casual dress (checked 2 October 2026).

Age and ID: three different rules

Three rules get mixed up at the door. The legal drinking age in Thailand is 20 (Thailand.go.th, May 2026). Separately, the Entertainment Place Act says venues licensed under it must not admit anyone under 20 and must examine an official photo document; we cannot see which licence each venue holds, so we do not say which venues it covers. And each venue sets its own door policy, which may depend on the time of day.

So the rules differ from place to place: Sina takes guests from 14 with a parent or guardian before 18:00 and only 20 and over after; Hard Rock Cafe admits only 20 and over after 22:00; Skybar Summer Club’s own rule says 18 and over, while nobody under 20 may drink. A venue may ask for ID at any age.

Carry your passport: a copy may not be accepted, and the venue decides. Away from the door, the US government advises carrying a copy of your passport and visa at all times.

Rules the venues publish

  • Sina: from 14 with a parent before 18:00, 20 and over after; smart resort dress; no sports jerseys, sweatpants, tank tops, sarongs, gym wear, ripped clothes or Crocs.
  • Hard Rock Cafe: 20 and over after 22:00; no dress code published.
  • Skybar Summer Club: its own rule says 18 and over on the upper deck; the drinking age is 20, so bring photo ID.
  • COAST, Rum Jungle and the Lobby Lounge at Dusit Thani: casual, by the hotels’ pages.
  • R Bar and Pebbles Bar and Grill at Renaissance Pattaya in Na Jomtien: casual, by the hotel’s page.

For the other venues we list we found no published dress code; each venue’s own page says what we found. If it matters, ask the venue before you go (checked 1 and 2 October 2026).

This is advice from other guides, not a rule a venue publishes. Pattayapointer’s Walking Street guide (July 2026) says flip-flops and beachwear are refused at the big clubs, naming Lucifer and Club Insomnia, and Visit Thailand Today (September 2026) says flip-flops can be a problem at Insomnia’s door. Neither club publishes a dress code.

What to wear

Our general advice, not a venue rule. For clubs and rooftop bars, smart casual: long trousers or smart shorts, a shirt or a neat top, closed shoes or smart sandals. For beach bars, resort wear, but check Sina’s list. The pubs and sports bars we list publish no dress rule.

Questions

Is there a dress code in Pattaya clubs?

The clubs we list publish none. Other guides say flip-flops and beachwear can be refused at the big Walking Street clubs, such as Lucifer and Insomnia (Pattayapointer, July 2026), so smart casual with closed shoes is safe. Bring photo ID.

How old do you have to be to go out in Pattaya?

The legal drinking age is 20, and venues licensed under the Entertainment Place Act must not admit anyone under 20. Venues also set their own door rules: Sina takes guests from 14 with a parent before 18:00, and Hard Rock Cafe admits only 20 and over after 22:00.

Can I use a passport copy?

It may not be accepted. The law asks licensed venues to check an official photo document, and the venue decides; carry your passport.

Can I wear shorts and flip-flops in Pattaya bars?

COAST, Rum Jungle, R Bar and Pebbles ask only for casual dress, by their hotels’ pages. Sina refuses sports jerseys, tank tops and Crocs, and other guides say flip-flops and beachwear can be refused at the big Walking Street clubs. Most other places publish no rule; ask the venue if it matters.
